What to Wear and Bring to Your First Padel Match
Your First Padel Match Packing List
Walking into a padel facility for the first time can feel a bit intimidating if you don't know what to expect. The good news: you don't need much to get started. Here's a simple guide to what to wear and bring.
Clothing
Padel is an active sport with lots of lateral movement, so wear something comfortable and breathable:
- Athletic shorts or skirts — avoid anything too long or restrictive
- A moisture-wicking t-shirt or tank top — you'll sweat more than you expect
- A light jacket or hoodie for warming up (indoor courts can be cool at first)
Shoes
This is the most important item. Do not wear running shoes. Padel involves a lot of side-to-side movement, and running shoes don't provide enough lateral support.
Your best options:
- Padel-specific shoes (if you have them)
- Tennis shoes or court shoes with flat, non-marking soles
- Avoid shoes with aggressive tread patterns — they can damage indoor court surfaces
Racket and Balls
Many DMV padel facilities offer equipment rental, so you don't need to buy a racket before your first match. If you do want to bring your own, check our beginner racket guide for budget-friendly options.
Balls are usually provided by the facility or included in court rental.
Other Essentials
- Water bottle — stay hydrated, especially on indoor courts
- Towel — a small hand towel for wiping sweat
- Spare grip or overgrip — if you have your own racket
- Sunglasses — for outdoor courts
- Sunscreen — if you're playing outdoors in summer
What to Expect
Most beginner sessions or open play events start with a brief intro to the rules and basic shots. Don't worry about your skill level — padel is a social sport and most players are happy to rally with beginners.
